Background information
The John Cunningham virus (JCV) is a widespread human polyomavirus with homology to BK polyomavirus (BKV). Primary JCV infection results in asymptomatic latent persistence of the virus in the gastrointestinal tract and the kidney. Immunodeficiency or immunosuppression allows virus reactivation, which can cause, e.g., a fatal progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. The large T antigen (LT) is a protein expressed early in the lytic cycle, initiating viral replication. It has been shown to be a target of T cell immunity.
