More Accurate Reporting of T Cell Depleted HSC Transplants With New ICD-10-PCS Code

A proposal to create a unique ICD-10-PCS code specific for T-cell depleted stem cell transplants was accepted by the Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting in April 2019. The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT, formerly ASBMT) requested the addition of a new ICD-10-PCS code to the existing Administration Table (Table 1) so hospitals will be able to report when      T-cell depleted grafts are used for inpatient hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplants.

Adding this code:

  • will allow for more accurate reporting of the specific type of transplant procedure
  • will enable comprehensive analysis of patient outcomes and cost differences by type of graft utilized
  • may support advocating for differentiated payment rates for stem cell transplants over time

Important milestones:

  • April 2019: CMS released the proposed rules referencing the finalized codes
  • August 2019: CMS will finalize and publish the new procedure code tables
  • October 1st, 2019: New T-cell depletion code is live
  • Revisit often – we will update with new information and tools as implementation gets closer
Figure 1
The Committee’s recommendation was consistent with the ASTCT’s request to add an additional option for the 6th character, or the Substance value (see bolded and italicized text in Table 1), of the seven digit ICD-10-PCS code to allow for a greater differentiation of the types of stem cells being administered to the patient.  Specifically– Stem Cells, Hematopoietic, T cell-Depleted will be added to Table 302 of section 3, Administration.

Note: The current year ICD-10-PCS code set and official guideline for coding and reporting should be used to reach the most appropriate code assignment.
