Owl – Senior Development Engineer – Santa Barbara, CA

Owl biomedical, Inc. is actively developing and commercializing microchip-based cell sorting systems that are changing the world of cell therapy and cancer diagnostics. We are breaking new ground with features and capabilities to make cell sorting easier and more reliable for our customers.

To support this effort, we are seeking a Senior Development Engineer to lead and advance the performance, design, and development of the company’s core medical instruments.  Within this role, you will develop and test key components of the instruments, collaborate and conduct experiments related to product development efforts of mechanical and electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, and machines. Overall, your keen ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team to lead and advance product development efforts will champion the continued success of Owl biomedical.


  • Develops and tests key components for the company’s core medical instruments.
  • Conducts key experiments to analyze technical problems by determining root causes and/or performance issues.
  • Develops testing methods and documentation to support the manufacture of core systems.
  • Collaborates on complex experiments related to product development efforts.
  • Independently analyzes development engineering issues and interprets results. 
  • Provides leadership to engineering personnel by leveraging experience to improve competencies and overall corporate capabilities.


  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Biology or related discipline
  • Master’s degree in a related field; 8-10 years of experience in a health science. Or medical device manufacturing environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience supporting some of the following commodities or supplier types: lasers, optical components, fluidic systems, machined parts, sheet metal, cables, PCA’s, plastics, power systems, product packaging, turnkey subcontractors and medical subsystem hardware
  • Proficiency with MatLab, or MiniTab, or flow cytometry software 
  • Preferred experience in developing manufacturing processes, flow cytometry/sorting, or other microfluidic and bioengineering devices
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills including conflict resolution, negotiation, and the ability to work in a team environment
