Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) facilitates the non-selective removal of pathogenic substances from a patient’s plasma. Such pathogens include paraproteins, autoantibodies, immune complexes, protein-bound toxins, and mediators of inflammation. TPE is an accepted first- or second-line therapy in several different diseases involving the aforementioned pathogens.
During TPE the plasma is separated from the cellular blood components. The plasma is then discarded and replaced by substitution solutions. The volume of the substitution solution used during a treatment session corresponds to 1 to 1.5 times the volume of the patient’s plasma.
