Background information

Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family, which is part of the TGF-β superfamily. Together with BMP-7, BMP-2 is a potent stimulator of osteoblast differentiation as well as of chondrocyte proliferation of mesenchymal cells during bone and cartilage formation, and can also induce cardiac and epithelial morphogenesis. BMP-2 is secreted by several cell tissues such as spleen, lung, liver, brain, small intestine, prostate, and ovary, as immature long form, and after proteolytic cleavage it matures into an active disulfide-linked homodimer. BMP-2 signals through heterodimeric receptors, such as BMPR1A, and activates TGF-β signaling cascade and the hedgehog pathway. Besides the morphogenic role, BMP-2 is also crucial during embryonic dorsal-ventral generation and organogenesis. Recombinant BMP-2 is under clinical investigation for treatment of bone degeneration diseases, spinal injuries, and orthodontic pathologies. Mature human mouse and rat BMP-2 share full amino acid sequence identity. Recombinant Human BMP-2 corresponds to the mature form of BMP-2.
