Background information

Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is predominantly produced by CD4
+
T cells. IL-5 secretion has also been reported for γ/δ T cells, mast cells, NK cells, NKT cells, and eosinophils.
The cytokine was originally identified by its activity as a B cell growth factor and IgA-enhancing factor. Furthermore, IL-5 regulates growth, differentiation, activation, and survival of eosinophils from bone marrow into peripheral circulation (e.g. into lung following allergen exposure). It is involved in a range of allergic reactions and mediates immune reactions against parasites.
