Since they were discovered by Ramón y Cajal in 1913, astrocytes were long neglected as active participants in the central nervous system (CNS). Thanks to the technological progress of the last 30 years, the critical roles of astrocytes in both, physiological and pathological processes in the CNS have been revealed.
This year, we dedicated our travel award to researchers around the world for their contributions to the exciting astrocyte research field.
We are happy to announce the winner of the Astrocyte Travel Award 2019.
"I’m really honored and grateful to Miltenyi Biotec that gave me the opportunity to participate and win this very useful and prestigious award. The 2019 Miltenyi Biotec Astrocyte Travel Award support me to join the XIV European Meeting on Glial Cells in Health and Disease, held in Porto this year. The great privilege to attend such a prestigious scientific meeting firstly gave me the opportunity to present and share the results of my research with eminent scientists coming from the most important research institutes in the world. I could improve my knowledge of glial cells and neurodegenerative diseases by attending outstanding symposia and finally I had the possibility to establish new strategic collaborative relationships to better develop and broaden my current research lines. Thanks Miltenyi Biotec!"
Marco Milanese is a researcher at the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Genoa. His scientific interest focuses on various aspects of neurotransmission and the molecular mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative processes, with particular interest in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Currently, he studies the etiopathological mechanisms of ALS. Very recently, Marco demonstrated the pivotal role of mGluR5 receptor in triggering the neurotoxic phenotype of astrocytes during the progression of ALS pathology (PMID: 28645622 and PMID: 31102766). This research might pave the way for a new therapeutic approach to counteract MN degeneration and ALS course.
