Background information

IGF-BP3 stands for insulin-like growth factor–binding protein 3. It is the primary IGF-binding protein stabilizing IGF-I as well as IGF-II and regulating their interaction with receptors. Besides its role for transporting IGF, IGF-BP3 has been shown to modulate EGF-EGFR–mediated cell growth, apoptosis, autophagy, and adipogenesis. Implications for a role of IGF-BP3 in several diseases have been found, such as cancer, dwarfism, or acromegaly.
