Background information

Human Cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1) belongs to the IL-6 cytokine family, which includes besides IL-6 also IL-11, LIF, CNTF, and Oncostatin M. The pleiotropic cytokine is expressed in different tissues, such as heart, skeletal muscle, prostate, liver, lung, or kidney and affects the various cell types via its interaction with the LIF receptor/gp130 receptor heterodimer. Cardiotrophin-1 can, for example, induce hypertrophy in cardiac myocyte, promotes survival of neuronal cells as well as cardiomyocytes and has been shown to be associated with several heart diseases.
