GLAST1 knockout mouse model
Overview
The GLAST1 knockout mouse is a genetically modified mouse strain in which the gene of this member of the superfamily of the glutamate/aspartate transport proteins has been disrupted.
Details
Background information
The GLAST1 (EAAT1,Slc1a3) protein is a glial, high affinity, L-glutamate transporter that is involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter concentration in the excitatory synapses of the central nervous system. The GLAST1 knockout mouse shows impairment of motor coordination.

This mouse model is exclusively licensed to Miltenyi Biotec and is made available to the scientific community in combination with a material transfer license. It has been developed against the backgrounds of both CD-1 and C57BL/6 strains and has carefully defined health and genetic profiles. The mice are housed in modern breeding facilities under specific pathogen-free conditions according to the recommendations of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Association and are continuously being backcrossed to avoid genetic drift.

The GLAST1 knockout mouse can be used as an ideal control in conjunction with the Anti-GLAST (ACSA-1) MicroBead Kit or the Astrocyte Isolation Starter Kits, which are based on an antibody against the extracellular epitope of GLAST, for the direct isolation of GLAST+ astrocytes.
