Human FGF-2
Description
Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2 or FGF2), also termed fibroblast growth factor basic (FGF-b) or basic FGF, belongs to the family of heparin-binding growth factors. Human FGF-2 is produced in E. coli as a single-chain non-glycosylated polypeptide. It functions as a wide-spectrum mitogenic, angiogenic, and neurotrophic factor and stimulates the proliferation of a wide variety of cells including mesenchymal, neuroectodermal, and endothelial cells. FGF-2 has been implicated in a multitude of physiological and pathological processes, including limb development, angiogenesis, wound healing, and tumor growth.

Application
Human FGF-2 can be used as a cell culture supplement to optimize the culture conditions for a broad variety of cell types, such as marrow stromal cells (MSCs), neural cells, and endothelial cells.
Quality description
Research grade
Research grade products are suitable for a variety of applications in cell culture, as media supplements, and for biological assays. It is the standard quality for all our products that have passed an accurate quality control. They are sterile-filtered with endotoxin levels below 0.1 ng/µg (< 1 EU/µg), and purities are generally higher than 95%. The biological activity has been tested in appropriate bioassays and usually a minimum activity is guaranteed. Otherwise the ED50 value or an optimal concentration range is given. For a few recently released products, some data are not yet available.

Cell culture grade
Cell culture grade products are lyophilized with medium, DMEM/F12 and FCS. They are optimal for certain applications where the direct reconstitution with water to a solution containing medium is favourable.

Premium grade
Selected cytokines and growth factors are available with a particular high and well-defined activity. They are intended for applications where the exact knowledge of the biological activity plays a crucial role. They have passed an extensive quality control with very tight specifications. The purity is higher than 98%. The biological activity has been determined after lyophilization in direct comparison with the respective WHO standards and the exact values are stated on the datasheet included in the delivery. They are widely used e.g. for the generation of dendritic cells and the cultivation of stem cells.
