Several developmental stages of T cells can be distinguished based on the expression levels of CD197 (CCR7) and CD45 isoforms. Naive T cells are CD45RA+CCR7+, whereas central memory and effector memory T cells are CD45RO+CCR7+ and CD45RO+CCR7–, respectively. Additionally, CD8+ effector T cells are CD45RA+CCR7– and express high levels of perforin and granzyme B.
