Mesenchymal stem cells, also known as mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are fibroblast-like plastic-adherent cells that can be isolated from a variety of tissues, such as bone marrow, periosteum, trabecular bone, adipose tissue, synovium, skeletal muscle, dental pulp.
MSC research may provide the basis for a variety of potential clinical applications:
- Tissue regeneration
- Immunomodulation
- Expansion of HSCs in vitro
- Improved engraftment of HSCs
- Delivery vehicle, e.g., for potential treatment of cancer or genetic disorders
To investigate the capability of MSCs in clinical applications, it is crucial to standardize their isolation and culture methods. Miltenyi Biotec has developed numerous tools and several protocols for MSC research.
