In cancer research, the unambiguous identification and characterization of disseminated or minimal residual tumor cells requires extremely sensitive methods. Target cells are often found to be truly minimal in numbers, making them occult to most analytical methods. Miltenyi Biotec has overcome these limitations through innovative reagents for research into circulating tumor cells. The new Carcinoma Cell Detection Kit as well as several pure or fluorochrome-conjugated antibodies are available for state-of-the-art immunocytochemical or flow cytometric analysis of epithelial-derived tumor cells (Anti-Cytokeratin, CD326 (EpCAM), CD45), melanoma cells and hematopoietic tumor cells. Moreover, specific enrichment of the target cells has proven to increase the sensitivity of tumor cell detection considerably. Several publications have proven the power of the Carcinoma Cell Enrichment and Detection Kits, CD326 (EpCAM), ErbB-2 and Melanoma Cell Enrichment and Detection Reagents, as well as the depletion of CD45+ cells, for the enrichment of epithelial tumor or melanoma cells from blood or bone marrow. The use of CD138 MicroBeads has become a standard research tool for the detection, enrichment and further characterization of malignant plasma cells in patients suffering from multiple myeloma or plasmacytoma, for example. All in all, MACS® Products for cancer research are potent tools for the highly sensitive and reliable detection of circulating tumor cells.
